What is FSSAI and why is registration required?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulates food safety in India. Registration or licensing is legally mandatory for every food business operator under the FSS Act, 2006.
What are the types of FSSAI approval?
Basic Registration (turnover up to ₹12 lakh), State License (₹12 lakh–₹20 crore), and Central License (above ₹20 crore, or import/export and multi-state operations).
How do I know which one I need?
It depends mainly on your annual turnover and business type. Share your details with us and we'll confirm the correct category free of cost.
What documents are required?
At minimum: photo ID, address proof, a photograph, and business/premises proof. Licences additionally need a premises layout, food safety plan and category details.
How long does the process take?
Basic Registration is usually issued within a few days. State and Central licences typically take 2–4 weeks depending on verification.
How long is an FSSAI licence valid?
You can choose 1 to 5 years. We recommend a longer tenure to reduce repeat paperwork, and we remind you before expiry.
What happens if I operate without FSSAI?
Running a food business without valid FSSAI registration can attract penalties up to ₹5 lakh and, in serious cases, imprisonment under the FSS Act.
Can I sell on Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon or Flipkart without FSSAI?
No. A valid FSSAI number is mandatory to list and sell food products on these platforms.
